The all-pervasive and much-loved Johnny Depp has two movies coming out this year: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and The Corpse Bride, both directed by Tim Burton. A Gemini, virtually all of his roles reflect the archetype of Hermes: messenger of the gods, guide of souls to the underworld, trickster, master of duplicity. My latest article on Astrology at the Movies explores how this archetype pervades the majority of Depp's film roles. To boot, it is also accessible, in that there is virtually no astrology in it! The essay actually belongs on Mythology at the Movies, but I'm busy enough as it is.
Capricorn is not in my vocabulary. I have no planets in this sign, nor is it on any of my angles. I do not know the meaning of hard work. Doing what must be done (the dishes) is contrary to my Piscean nature. However, I live with a Scorpio with many Virgo planets and a packed sixth house, so I get whipped into doing them anyway. Capricorn is ruled by Saturn, which is the planet ruling hard, cold reality. Capricorn wants success, status, authority. Workaholism applies to more than one's career. Consider where you over-strive in life, where you try to compensate for perceived deficiencies. One can be rigidly perfectionistic and goal-oriented in one's love life, raising one's children, keeping one's home clean. As Capricornian energy is highlighted during the full moon, remember that having a trophy spouse or kids with five extracurriculars may be your attempt to mask a deep feeling of insecurity. Dip your foot into the cold pool of not good enough. If you explore this uncomfortable part of your psyche long enough, the waters will warm up, and you will bask in self-acceptance. (I should write fortune cookies!)
Astrology at the Movies has gotten some uncertain press from another blogger who read my Tim Burton essay: "Two Astrological Thumbs Up! Behold, Jeffrey Kishner, an Astrological Counselor and Psychotherapist [three words I never expected to see together], who maintains a blog offering 'Astrological Film Criticism.'" I can't tell if he's being facetious, but at least he drove some traffic to my site. On a more serious note, Donna Van Toen of the NCGR memberletter has this to say about my anthology The Astrology of Film: "...immensely readable....If you are a film buff, this is a book well worth looking at. Even if you're not, this is a unique book that fills a gap in existing literature and is definitely worthwhile." (bolds are mine)
