The Waxing Moon is released at the beginning of each lunar cycle, to inform you about my astrological take on film professionals, the upcoming full moon, and anything else that draws my attention.
What do Geena Davis, star of the new TV drama Commander in Chief; Joan Allen, star of the film The Contender; and Rod Lurie, creator of both the series and the film, have in common? All three have aspects between Jupiter—which rules politics and success—and Pluto—which rules power, obsession and underhandedness. The latest essay on my Astrology at the Movies blog explores the many expressions of this archetypal combination in the work of director Rod Lurie, as well as the actors and actresses who have worked with him.
Until summer 2007, Saturn and Neptune are at
opposite ends of the zodiac. Saturn rules material reality and
the
tests we face in daily life that force us to grow
up. Neptune is the planet of mysticism and
imagination. In a nutshell, the opposition between
Saturn and
Neptune relates to This opposition will manifest on a collective level in world events, and will especially affect those individuals with planets in Taurus, Leo, Scorpio or Aquarius. For an in-depth exploration of the Saturn-Neptune combination, read Saturn- Neptune and the Desert of the Real by Bill Streett. Caution: It is not for the faint of heart. During the upcoming full moon in Taurus on November 15, Mars in Taurus will be approximately 90 degrees from both planets. This is called a t-square, because the angles the three planets make to each other (from our humble, geocentric perspective) look like the tool of the same name. Taurus is a fixed earth sign. Fixed means stubborn and unrelenting, resistant to change. Earth is pragmatic, and focuses on what you can actually put your hands on. Taurus is earthy and sensual; she can also be possessive and acquisitive. Ruled by Venus, this sign is ultimately about the value we place on our objects and ourselves. The full moon highlights this Taurean aspect of the collective psyche. In addition, Mars lingers in Taurus longer than he stays in most signs, due to his retrograde cycle (in which he appears to be moving backwards in the sky). Mars is an action planet, whereas Taurus likes to luxuriate at the spa, so this is not the ideal placement for getting things done quickly. However, although Mars in Taurus takes a while to get going in any endeavor, he's in it for the long haul once the momentum builds up, and it won't be easy to get him to stop or change his course. Mars is also not happy squaring either Saturn or Neptune. He wants to act on the world; Saturn puts up walls to block him from moving forward, and Neptune dilutes whatever energy he had to begin with. Ebertin writes that Mars at the midpoint of Saturn and Neptune (meaning that Mars is equidistant from both planets, as in a t-square) relates to "lack of creative energy" and "inactivity through emotional depression." However, there are "high" and "low" expressions of any astrological configuration. In my mind, the highest expression of this t-square is to act (Mars) selflessly (Neptune) in a disciplined manner (Saturn), or to work (Mars) really hard (Saturn) to realize your dreams (Neptune). During this full moon, especially with Mars in Taurus, focus on your attachments. On what (or whom) do you depend for feelings of comfort and security? The gift of Taurus is that she does not give up easily; the downside of Taurus is that she is reluctant to let go of her baggage. The polar opposite of Taurus is Scorpio, which is about death and renewal. Let the light from the Scorpio Sun illuminate that which you are ready to throw out (or recycle!); let Neptune dissolve the rigidity (Saturn) that prevents you from initiating change.
Astrology and the Fixed Signs If you are a Taurus, Scorpio, Leo or Aquarius, come to this talk to learn what y’all have in common. At the Park Slope Food Coop, 782 Union Street, Brooklyn, NY, on Sunday, November 13 at noon. This talk is FREE.
